Improve Folding Carton Bond Strength with Enercon Plasma Treatment
MENOMONEE FALLS, WI-Converters, such as Green Bay Packaging, are taking advantage of Enercon’s atmospheric plasma surface treating technologies to improve the performance of their gluer folder operations. Adding Enercon’s Dyne-A-Mite™ IT atmospheric plasma treater increases adhesive bond strength for both hot-melt and cold-glue adhesives.
In addition, these economical plasma treatment systems increase folding carton production speeds and generate cost savings by allowing the use of less expensive adhesives, and eliminating the need for mechanical surface preparations such as glue flap roughening and perforating.
Converters find that Enercon’s plasma treatment provides a benefit to any carton adhesive application including glue flap strength and window adhesion. Most impressive is the technologies ability to effectively treat a wide variety of materials including, polyboard, specially coated surfaces, and UV lacquered surfaces.
Enercon’s atmospheric plasma produces these results by cleaning the surface of contaminants, micro-roughening the surface to create more bonding sites and functionalizing for adhesion. Key to the success is a blown-ion discharge that bombards the surface with a high speed discharge of ions. Positive ion bombardment facilitates a micro-etching or scrubbing (ablation) effect to remove (desorb) organic and inorganic contaminants from the surface.
Atmospheric plasma systems are safe to operate and easy to integrate into existing or new production lines. Single head and multiple treatment head systems are available. Watch a video of the Dyne-A-Mite™ IT in action.
