How Cap Torque Affects Cap Seal Integrity (Watch Video Demo)
Achieving a reliable induction seal requires proper application cap torque. In this video, Enercon’s Jessica Toellner walks you through a simple but powerful demonstration showing just how critical application cap torque is to your sealing success.
The Demonstration: Same Containers, Same Liners, Different Torque
To illustrate the impact of cap torque, we sealed two identical containers using the same induction sealer, same power level, and same conveyor speed. The only variable? The amount of torque applied to each cap.
Using a tabletop torque meter, we torqued the first cap to the recommended setting: half the cap size in inch-pounds. Since we’re working with an 83 mm cap, we applied the target torque of approximately 41 inch-pounds.
For the second container, we intentionally torqued the cap to half of the recommended torque. Insufficient torque is the most common cause for seal failures. Although caps may appear secure, they lack the pressure needed for a consistent seal.
The Results: Perfect Induction Seal vs. Induction Seal Failure
After sealing both containers, the difference was clear:
- The properly torqued cap produced a clean, consistent seal all the way around the land area.
- The under-torqued cap, on the other hand, produced an inconsistent seal. The liner bonded in some areas but popped off easily in others—classic signs of inadequate application pressure.
Why This Matters
Proper application cap torque is not optional—it’s foundational. Without it, even the best induction sealing equipment won’t deliver consistent results. If you’re seeing seals that are lifting, incomplete, or easily removed, the first place to check is your capper.
